Description

A Bottle from one of the oldest Distilleries in Ireland formerly known as Brusna, Locke's distillery in Kilbeggan, Ireland was founded in 1757.

It became Locke's Distillery in 1843 when it was acquired by John Locke, who oversaw an early period of flourishing for the business.

It remained in his family until 1893, when it was converted to a limited stock company known as John Locke & Co. The distillery continued to thrive until the outset of the Irish wars of independence, which halted production between 1924 and 1931, leaving the company in financial strife. Prohibition in the US had not helped matters either.

After struggling for many years to recover, the distillery was put up for sale in 1947, but after struggling to find a buyer, eventually shut down in 1953 with the company folded 5 years later, bringing a 201 year legacy to an end.

The Brand and old Kilbeggan Distillery was bought by John Teeling and the Cooley Distillery team in the 1980's who have since revived it as a working distillery with the first new make running from it's stills in 2010.

This was most likely an export bottle for the US

Cooley Distillery

The Cooley distillery has a special place in the recent history of Irish whiskey. The man that alot of people credit with kick starting the revival of independent distilling in Ireland, Mr John Teeling bought the cooley distillery in 1987. With the team of people that he assembled around him, the Cooley distillery began to flourish and it wasn't long before he spotted the opportunity to revive lost brands in the lockes, kilbeggan and tyrconnell brands. Cooley continued the growth with mass producing own brand labeled whiskey for the supermarkets and the production of the now legendary Connemara peated whiskey. Cooley was sold in 2011 to the American drinks brand BEAM but beam has since been bought by Suntory Holdings of Japan.
