Mainly produced using the Nebbiolo variety, Barolo can be considered one of Italy's greatest wines. Located at altitude, the vineyard is made up of sandy loam, magnesium, and manganese in the northwest as well as iron-rich land in the southeast. Two styles of Barolo can be found. The first is modern, fruity, and supple wines with riper tannins thanks to aging in new barrels. The other kind is classic Barolos, thick with high tannin levels and often dried by delayed bottling. Generally speaking, Barolo wines can be identified by their very dark color as well as their remarkable aromatic complexity. These massive, powerful but elegant wines are characterized by notes of creamy vanilla, tobacco, and smoke.
