Letter from Cork Distilleries Co Ltd to William Pulling & Co, Hereford dated July 18 1872.
The letter is to confirm receipt of a cheque for £48 14/-. Signed by the Cork Distilleries Manager, Stephen O'Hea Cussen and their managing Director, James John Murphy (1825–1897). Murphy was a key figure in the 19th-century Irish drinks industry. He was the driving force behind the massive 1867 amalgamation that created the Cork Distilleries Company Limited, merging his family's Midleton plant with four rival Cork distilleries to end local rivalries and share operational costs. It was headquartered on Morrison's Island in Cork. By 1872, the company owned five major distilleries; North Mall, Midleton, Watercourse, Green and Daly's. Pulling was a gin distiller as well as wine and spirit merchant, who operated a major regional drinks trade, managing bonded warehouses, distributing wines and spirits.
