Independent bottlers are common within the Scotch industry, independent bottlers seek out the best casks from active and closed distilleries throughout Scotland. Independent releases can feature new and exciting younger whiskies or more aged statement releases, The Last Drop Distillers & Duncan Taylor are two such examples.
About 90% of all Scotch created is "Blended Scotch". Blended Scotch whisky is a blend of malt and grain whiskies, matured in oak barrels. Blended whisky is the lifeblood of the Scottish whisky industry, the most famous brands of Scotch are all blended. Johnnie Walker, Dewars, Ballantine & Chivas are all examples of this. In the beginning, blending whisky was a method of improving the quality of the spirit, wood management and distilling quality controls were not as they are today, and "Bad Batches" of whisky could be improved by blending them to create something better. Over time blenders have become more skilled and appreciated for creating new flavors and improving the quality of Scotch whisky.
