The Portmagee Story

Portmagee is a historic fishing village in South Kerry and is the gateway to Valentia Island, the Skellig Rocks and the Skellig Coast. Portmagee is named after Capt Theobald Magee, a Jacobean smuggler who along with his wife Brigid Morgell from Dingle established a lucrative smuggling base in our harbour smuggling Caribbean Rum Wines, textiles and spices from Portugal and Spain to Ireland the early 1700’s.

Portmagee Distilling and Brewing Company was founded in early 2017 by two brothers John and James Murphy who are from Portmagee, Co. Kerry. Together they have collaborated with Stuart McNamara, Irish whiskey writer and aficionado and owner of IrishWhiskey.com WhiskeyBlogger.com and plan to build a distillery and brewhouse on the site which was the old RIC barracks until it fell into disrepair.

The First release of Portmagee whiskey is limited to only 399 bottles which were only available to locals in the south Kerry area

The Blend started with a terrific nine year old single grain as the blank canvas for a Barbados Dark Rum Cask Finish (homage to Capt Magee’s smuggling past) and added some thirteen year old Irish single malt  to give the finished blend even more depth and character. Another unique touch is that the whiskeys are all married to the correct blend proportions in the rum casks rather than maturing separately and blended before bottling as is often the case. Despite its age and finish, Portmagee Whiskey is quite light in colour as we have decided not to add any of the normally permitted caramel artificial colouring. Nor is it Chill filtered.

This Bottle is Number 397 of only 399 and is kindly signed by Stuart McNamara to add extra individuality to this Bottling for a very worthy Cause.  www.facebook.com/zoemurphyappeal/
