Before You Have Your Say on the Irish Whiskey Technical File… Pour a wee glasheen of something

If you’ve spent any time on whiskey social media over the last week, you’ve probably noticed that everyone suddenly became an expert on the Irish Whiskey Technical File.

Some have read every page.Some have read the headlines.Some… well, let’s just say they’ve read the comments. The truth is, this is one of the biggest conversations the Irish whiskey industry has had in years, and it’s one that’s worth getting right. We have seen lots of movement in our whiskey world of late, and this is a welcome chat about what can be updated in our whiskey bible.

So, what are they all on about?

The Irish Whiskey Technical File is the official legal document defining the Geographical Indication (GI) for Irish Whiskey. Registered with the European Commission in 2014, it sets the strict legal parameters that a spirit must meet to be legally labeled as Irish whiskey. Its the product spec, while not a specific recipe—each distillery uses its own unique proportions and methods—it is an ingredient and production rulebook with some strict criteria.It’s really the framework that protects one of our best-known exports around the world. It covers how Irish whiskey is made and helps preserve the integrity of the category.

Like any rulebook, it isn’t set in stone forever.

From time to time it’s reviewed, and that’s exactly what’s happening now.

The consultation is open…

…and the important bit is that it stays open until 4 September 2026. Which means nobody needs to panic.There’s no prize for being the first person to submit a response lads and ladies.Kind of the opposite.

Over the coming weeks we’ll no doubt hear from distillers, blenders, historians, academics, farmers and plenty of people who’ve dedicated their careers to Irish whiskey. They’ll be reading every line, discussing every proposal and helping explain some of the technical language that’s understandably unfamiliar to many of us, and that’s a good thing.

Our advice?

Take your time. Read the document if you can. Read different opinions. Listen to people who know the subject inside out.

Then decide where you stand.

At Irish Whiskey Auctions we’re fortunate enough to work with bottles from every corner of the Irish whiskey world. Old, new, famous, obscure, historic and modern—they all pass through our hands every single month. One thing we’ve learned is that Irish whiskey has never stood still. It has constantly evolved. Sometimes slowly. Sometimes dramatically.

But it has always managed to keep people talking.

Why should collectors care?

It’s easy to think this is something that only affects distilleries. It isn’t.

Collectors are preserving the history of Irish whiskey every bit as much as producers are creating its future.I think many people forget that, in your good rooms, your offices, your whiskey rooms, your man caves, your she-sheds, your wardrobes and even your attics ( we don’t advise this!) , there are pieces of Irish Whiskey History being kept for posterity. Every old label tells a story. Every discontinued bottle captures a moment in time.Every auction reminds us how much people value authenticity and provenance.

The decisions made today may shape the bottles that collectors are chasing twenty or thirty years from now, and that’s worth paying attention to.

A good conversation beats a loud one

Whiskey people are passionate. We know that better than most. We’ve seen friendships formed over bottles, lively debates over mash bills and the occasional disagreement over whether a certain bottle really deserved to make four figures at auction.

The point is, good conversations usually happen when people listen as much as they speak. This consultation is no different.

Our view

We’re not here to tell anyone what they should think. We’re here to encourage people to read, understand and take part. Irish whiskey has one of the richest stories in the world. Its next chapter deserves thoughtful discussion too. If you decide to make a submission, make it your own.

And if you need a stiff drink while reading a few dozen pages of technical documentation… well, we certainly wouldn’t judge. We’ll be doing the exact same ourselves most likely !
